The many lands of Gyrd

Gyrd is home to thousands of land areas, ranging in size to tiny islets to a massive supercontinent. Gyrdian land areas can be classified into four types of land areas: supercontinents, continents, island groups, and isolated islands.

A supercontinent is an extremely large land area that is the largest contiguous land mass of more than one continental lithospheric plate, or a lithospheric plate whose surface area is at least 75% covered by either a majority of a continent, all of a continent, or part of a supercontinent. Only one supercontinent exists on Gyrd: Lahyrnt, which covers a significant portion of Gyrd's surface area.

A continent is a large land area that is the largest contiguous land mass of a continental lithospheric plate, with said lithospheric plate providing the continent with more than half of its total area. There are five continents on Gyrd, three of which are located between Gyrd's northern polar circle and Gyrd's southern polar circle, one of which is located on Gyrd's north geographical pole, and one of which is located on Gyrd's south geographical pole.

An island group is a collection of land masses that are too small to be considered continents, but are geographically related to each other. Many Gyrdian island groups are located on the continental shelf of a supercontinent or continent, although there are nine island groups on Gyrd that lack significant geographical relation to a supercontinent or continent. The vast majority of Gyrd's islands are part of island groups.

An isolated island is a single island that is not, in any way, geographically related to a supercontinent, continent, or other island(s). Only two isolated islands exist on Gyrd.
